What is Hot Chocolate?
Hot chocolate is a creamy hot beverage that combines chocolate with liquid to make the best drink ever. (We’re big hot chocolate fans over here!) It is made from cocoa powder or melted chocolate, sugar, milk, and/or water. Traditionally, a cup of hot chocolate is made by whisking the powder or melted chocolate into the warm water or warm milk. You would then add the sugar and continue whisking until smooth, foamy, and lavishly creamy. This would give you a cup of traditional hot chocolate, but we like spicing things up a bit now and then. So we’re spilling some secrets for making your hot chocolate even better!
Fantastic Hot Chocolate Secrets
Use Caramel
Caramel is great on anything, but in hot chocolate, it’s even better. Below is our favourite caramel hot chocolate recipe! A few little secrets you can try are to use whole milk or cream for a really thick and creamy drink and add a small pinch of salt to help balance out the sweetness. Adding just a teaspoon or two of caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade) can go a really long way in hot chocolate. For an added bonus, drizzle with caramel sauce on top before you drink it!
Caramel Hot Chocolate Ingredients
2 cups of milk (or cream, or a dairy-free alternative)
2 tablespoons of cocoa powder
2 tablespoons of caramel sauce
1-2 tablespoons of sugar, depending on your sweetness preference
¼ teaspoon of vanilla extract
Whipped cream for the topping
Caramel sauce to drizzle
How to Make Caramel Hot Chocolate
Heat the milk in a pot on the stove. While the milk is heating, whisk together the cocoa powder and sugar until evenly mixed. Once the milk is warm, add the cocoa powder and sugar to it while whisking. Once smooth, add the caramel sauce. Then add the vanilla extract. (This is where you can add the pinch of salt!) Finally, let it heat for a couple minutes to ensure it’s nice and hot. Pour into a mug and top with whipped cream. Add a drizzle of caramel sauce and voila!
Froth Your Milk
One of the best kept cafe secrets when it comes to making the best hot chocolate is to froth the milk before you make it. It makes it extra creamy! For the best results, use whole milk or cream, but any milk or dairy-free alterative will work. To froth your milk, simply use a milk frother. But if you don’t have one, hand whisk the milk or put it in a jar and shake for thirty seconds to create that decadent texture.
Frothed Milk Hot Chocolate Ingredients
2 cups milk
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
2 tablespoons of sugar (1-2 depending on your flavour preference)
½ teaspoon of vanilla extract
Whipped cream and marshmallows for topping
How to Make Frothed Milk Hot Chocolate
While heating the milk on the stove, use a frother to create that luscious, frothy texture. If you don’t have a frother, you can use a hand whisk or shake the milk in a jar for approximately thirty seconds. In a separate bowl, combine the cocoa powder and sugar and add a couple teaspoons of the frothed milk to it to make a paste-like texture. Once the pot of frothed milk is hot, you can pour it in and mix well. Stir in the vanilla extract. Pour the frothy milk mixture into the mug, using a spoon to hold back the foam. Then spread the foam out and garnish with whipped cream and marshmallows!
Use chocolate chips.
If you’re after a really creamy texture, then don’t sleep on this secret. Add in semi-sweet chocolate chips right to your hot chocolate. As you’re stirring your drink, add in a teaspoon or two or chocolate chips for a melty, luxurious experience. You can add this to any hot chocolate recipe!
Add Some Coffee
Want to give your coffee a kick? Add a small shot of espresso or instant coffee to your hot chocolate. This addition will add depth to the flavour and give a glorious scent! Coffee intensifies the chocolate flavour, so be prepared for an ultra chocolatey hot chocolate!
